Easy and Tasty Lok Lak (Cambodian Shaking Beef)

If you’re up for trying new foods, check out this tasty Lok Lak aka Cambodian shaking beef. This dish is so easy to make and it’s packed with proteins and nutrients which is a win-win for everybody! I grew up eating lots of vegetables (thanks to my mom) so I try to incorporate veggies of some sort into every dish and Lok Lak is not an exception.

Here you can find cucumbers, lettuce, onions and tomatoes which complements the sweeter savory taste of the steak. I also have to have my fried eggs on the side, it’s added proteins and makes the meal even more filling. I like to smother the Lok Lak over jasmine rice then call it a quick and tasty meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 stalks of green onions, diced

  • 1 medium tomato, sliced

  • 1 large cucumber, sliced

  • 1 medium onion, sliced

  • Lettuce, shredded

  • Cooked jasmine rice

  • For the steak:
  • 1 lb of steak

  • 2 tbsp of vegetable oil

  • 1/2 tsp of fried garlic

  • 3 tbsp of oyster sauce

  • 2 3/4 tsp of sugar

  • 1/4 tsp of black pepper

  • 1/4 tsp of msg

  • For the eggs:
  • 1 tbsp of vegetable oil

  • Large eggs

Directions

  • Prepare veggies by slicing tomatoes, cucumbers and onions. Chop the lettuce and green onions then put aside.
  • Prepare meat by cutting into cubes.
  • Heat up large skillet over medium heat adding in vegetable oil and heat for
2 mins before adding in the fried garlic. Allow that to heat for 2 mins.
  • Stir in steak and add seasonings mixing together well and cook for 2-3 mins.
  • Add in onions and continue cooking for 7 -8 mins or until medium well. Stirring ocassionally.
  • While the steak is cooking, preheat a nonstick pan over medium-high heat then add in vegetable oil (I forgot the pan was non-stick and ended up putting more oil than necessary, use 1 tbsp). Crack the eggs into the frying pan and cook for 3-4 mins then flip and cook for another 3-4 mins until goldish brown.
  • Remove from frying pan and sprinkle the eggs with salt and pepper or soy sauce, I prefer soy sauce.
  • Once steak is cooked, turn stove off.
  • I typically serve this on a plate with rice placed in the center, surrounded by the vegetables and eggs, then I scoop the steak on top of the rice and finish it off with sprinkles of the green onions. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Optional: You can have fried eggs or hard boiled eggs with this dish. The hard boiled eggs would be the healthier option considering the absence of oil.
