Simple Grilled Steak Classic Banh Mi Sandwich

This Banh mi sandwich or nom pang pate (in Khmer), is the Asian version of your hoagie from Subway or Potbelly. I used to order this from iPho but now I just make my own! What sets this apart from the American version is primarily the pork- the meatloaf itself and the pate, which is a French paste made from ground meat.

The pate does have a distinct taste so I use it sparingly on my bread. You’ll want to mix it in with the mayo and butter so the taste isn’t too strong. In doing so, it’ll add the most savory flavor to your sandwich. It is completely optional and some folks like to leave it off but personally, I would highly recommend it. Once you layer the bread with meats and veggies, you get this super delightful sandwich.

If you prefer an American sandwich, try this Philly Cheesesteak recipe or Shrimp Rolls. They are both very satisfying and do not contain any pork, for any non-pork lovers ☺️

  • Mayo

  • Pate

  • Meatloaf

  • Cucumbers, julienne

  • Carrots, julienne

  • Jalapeño peppers, sliced

  • Cilantro

  • For the steak seasoning:
  • 1/2 lb of steak

  • 2 stalks of green onions, chopped

  • 1 tbsp of olive oil

  • 1 tbsp of fish sauce

  • 1/2 tbsp of soy sauce

  • 1/2 tbsp of sugar

  • 1/2 tsp of garlic powder

  • 1/8 tsp of black pepper

Directions

  • Start with the steak- slice the meat into thinner strips and add seasonings: olive oil, fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar, garlic powder, black pepper and chopped green onions. Mix well then set aside and let it marinate.
  • Prep the veggies- julienne cut the cucumbers and carrots, slice the jalapeño peppers and cut the stem off the cilantro.
  • Preheat griddle or pan to 300 degrees coating with non-stick spray. Allow it to heat for 2-3 mins then add the steak.

  • Take the bread out and layer it with the meats first – meatloaf and steak then the veggies- carrots, cucumbers, jalapeño peppers and cilantro.
